Troubleshooting microphone and camera access

Your JobMojito interview is a spoken conversation, so the browser has to be able to hear you. Some interviews are also recorded on video, and those need your camera as well.
The first time you open the interview link, your browser asks for permission — one tap, and you are done. This article covers that prompt, and the far more common support case: you pressed "Block" once (or your phone did it for you) and now the prompt never comes back.
Which devices does my interview need?
You do not have to guess — the activation button on the interview page tells you:
Everything below applies to both devices. Where a step is camera-only, it is marked — skip it if your button says Activate Microphone.
Which address am I looking for?
Interview links do not all live on the same domain. Depending on how the employer set things up, yours may be:
a jobmojito.com address, such as
app.jobmojito.com,an interviewmojito.com address,
or the employer's own domain, such as
careers.your-employer.com.
They all work identically. Browser permissions are stored per address, so wherever these steps say "find the interview address", they mean the exact address showing in your address bar right now — not literally "jobmojito.com". The screenshots below use interview.example.com as a stand-in for yours.
Tip: before you open settings, click the address bar and copy the address, or just note the part before the first
/. That is what you are looking for in the permission lists.
Quick answer
If you are in a hurry, this fixes it on almost every device:
Look for a small crossed-out camera or microphone icon at the right-hand end of the address bar (desktop), or tap the icon to the left of the web address (phone).
Set the camera and the microphone for this site to Allow.
Reload the page.
If there is no icon at all, your browser is not blocking the site — the block is one level up, in your phone's or computer's own privacy settings. Jump to The browser itself is blocked.
1. The normal flow: the permission prompt
When you open the interview link, the browser shows a small prompt. Choose Allow. One prompt covers both devices — blocking it blocks the camera and the microphone together.
Then JobMojito runs a short microphone test — you say a few words, and when your words appear on screen you are ready to start. If the interview uses video you will also see a preview of your own camera. Do not skip these checks. They are the cheapest way to find a problem before the interview begins, and skipping them is the single most common reason a candidate loses an attempt.
Two things worth knowing:
The permission is remembered per website and per browser. Allowing it in Chrome does not allow it in Safari, and a private / incognito window forgets it every time you close it.
If you open the interview link from inside another app (LinkedIn, Facebook, Gmail, WhatsApp), it may open in that app's built-in mini-browser, which often cannot use the camera or microphone at all. Use the app's "Open in browser" option and take the interview in Chrome or Safari instead.
2. Re-enabling devices you already blocked
This is the situation behind most support tickets. Once you press Block, the browser stops asking — so it looks as if nothing is happening. The block is stored against the website and has to be removed by hand.
Messages that mean "you blocked it"
Messages that mean something else — see Other device problems:
Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera — desktop
Click the blocked camera / microphone icon at the right of the address bar.
Select Always allow camera and microphone on this site. Some Chrome versions show Camera and Microphone as two separate rows — set both to Allow.
Click Done.
Reload the interview page.
If the icon is not there, remove the stored block from the settings page instead:
Paste
chrome://settings/content/microphoneinto the address bar and press Enter.Under Not allowed to use your microphone, find the interview address and click the bin icon to remove it.
Check that Sites can ask to use your microphone is selected at the top, and that the correct microphone is chosen in the dropdown.
Video interviews: repeat all of it at
chrome://settings/content/camera.Reload the interview page and press Allow.
Other browsers use the same pages: edge://settings/content/…, brave://settings/content/…, opera://settings/content/….
Official Chrome instructions: Use your camera and microphone in Chrome
Safari — Mac
Menu bar: Safari ▸ Settings… (⌘ +
,). On macOS 12 and earlier this is Safari ▸ Preferences….Open the Websites tab, then select Microphone in the sidebar.
Find the interview address in the list and set it to Allow.
Video interviews: click Camera in the same sidebar and repeat.
Close Settings and reload the page.
A faster route for the current page: Safari ▸ Settings for This Website…, then set Microphone and Camera to Allow.
Official Apple instructions: Change Websites settings in Safari on Mac
iPhone and iPad — Safari
On the interview page, tap the page-settings icon in the address bar — AA or ⋯.
Tap Website Settings.
Tap Microphone and choose Allow. Do the same for Camera when it is listed.
Go back and reload the page.
If those entries are missing, or the prompt still never appears, check the two settings that sit above Safari:
Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Microphone — the switch next to Safari (or Chrome, Edge, whichever browser you use) must be on. Then do the same under Privacy & Security ▸ Camera. If these are off, no website can see or hear you in that browser, whatever you set on the page.
Settings ▸ Apps ▸ Safari (on iOS 17 and earlier: Settings ▸ Safari) — Microphone and Camera must be Ask or Allow. Set to Deny, Safari never shows the prompt.
Also check Settings ▸ Screen Time ▸ Content & Privacy Restrictions — if restrictions are on and the microphone or camera is set to Don't Allow, the switches above are greyed out. This is common on phones managed by a school or an employer.
Official Apple instructions: Browse the web privately in Safari on iPhone
Android — Chrome
On the interview page, tap the icon to the left of the web address (a lock, or a sliders/⚙ icon).
Tap Permissions (older versions: Site settings).
Switch Microphone on — and Camera too, for a video interview.
Go back and reload the page.
If those rows are not in the list, nothing is blocked at site level — the block is on the Chrome app itself:
Settings ▸ Apps ▸ Chrome ▸ Permissions.
Open Microphone and choose Allow only while using the app. Repeat for Camera.
Reload the interview page and tap Allow.
Some Android phones (Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei, OnePlus) add a second privacy layer — look for a Privacy or Permission manager section with global microphone and camera switches, or a "camera and microphone access" toggle in Quick Settings, and make sure both are on.
Official Chrome instructions: Use your camera and microphone in Chrome — Android
The browser itself is blocked (system level)
On a Mac, macOS keeps its own lists on top of the browser's. If the browser is not on them, no website setting will help.
Apple menu ▸ System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Microphone — switch your browser on, then do the same under ▸ Camera. On macOS 12 and earlier: System Preferences ▸ Security & Privacy ▸ Privacy. macOS will ask you to quit and reopen the browser afterwards.
On Windows: Settings ▸ Privacy & security ▸ Microphone — turn on Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone, and check that Let desktop apps access your microphone is on and lists your browser. Repeat under Privacy & security ▸ Camera.
3. Other device problems
"Microphone is in use" / "Camera or microphone is in use" Another program has the device open. Close Zoom, Teams, Google Meet, Discord, Skype, any voice recorder, the Camera app, and any other browser tab that is in a call — then press Try again. On Windows, a video-call app can keep the camera even when its window is only minimised; quit it fully.
"Microphone not found" / "Camera or microphone not found" Plug in your headset or webcam, or check that your Bluetooth headphones are connected and selected. If you connected something after opening the page, reload it. Then use the device selector in JobMojito to pick the right input.
The camera is allowed but the picture is black Check the physical privacy shutter or slider on the webcam or laptop lid — many laptops have one, and a closed shutter looks exactly like a broken camera. Also check that a virtual camera (OBS, Snap Camera, a background-blur tool) has not taken over: pick the real camera in the device selector. On Lenovo/HP/Dell laptops, a function key (often F8 or a key with a camera icon) can disable the camera at hardware level.
"Face not detected — Make sure your face is fully visible in the camera" The camera works, but the picture is unusable. Face a window or a lamp rather than sitting with a bright window behind you, centre yourself in the frame, and take off sunglasses or a hat.
"Camera disconnected" / "Microphone disconnected" The device dropped out mid-interview — usually an unplugged cable, a Bluetooth headset that went to sleep, or another app grabbing it. Reconnect it; the interview continues.
"Microphone is muted — Unmute your microphone to continue" Permission is fine. Unmute with the microphone button in JobMojito, and check the hardware mute switch or inline button on your headset — most headsets have one.
"We are having trouble hearing you clearly" Speak a little louder, move closer to the microphone, and reduce background noise. Bluetooth headsets often sound better once you switch to the device's built-in microphone instead.
The Start button stays disabled on a video interview The interview will not start without a live camera picture. Make sure the preview shows you — a covered, disabled or in-use camera keeps the button greyed out.
The prompt appears and disappears instantly, or nothing happens at all You are probably in an in-app mini-browser (a link opened from LinkedIn, Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram). Open the link in Chrome or Safari directly. Also make sure the address starts with https:// — browsers only grant camera and microphone access to secure pages.
4. Before you contact support
Please try these first — they resolve nearly every ticket:
[ ] Reload the interview page.
[ ] Check the camera/microphone icon in the address bar and set the site to Allow.
[ ] Close Zoom / Teams / Meet and any other tab or app that could be using your devices.
[ ] Open the camera shutter / check the camera disable key on your laptop.
[ ] Check your system-level permissions (macOS, Windows, iOS, Android — section above).
[ ] Try a different browser — Chrome or Safari, in a normal (not private/incognito) window.
[ ] Try a different device, including your phone.
Still stuck? Reply to your invitation email or open a ticket, and include:
the browser and version, and the operating system (e.g. Chrome 138, Windows 11, Safari, iPhone iOS 18),
the interview address from your address bar (the part before the first
/),whether the button said Activate Microphone or Activate Microphone & Camera,
the exact message shown on screen (a screenshot is ideal),
whether the prompt appears at all, or nothing happens,
whether the camera and microphone work in another site or app.
Your progress is safe. Answers you have already given are stored, and you can return to the same link and continue from where you left off. If your attempt cannot be recovered, the recruiter can grant you another one — ask in your reply.
